Sinking into Self

Greetings to everybody from our beautiful retreat Mystery of Oneness with Madhukarji in sunny Goa, India!

To let you all take part in the graceful Satsangs here in our ocean breezed pavilion,
we transcribed for you this beautiful dialog from 19.01.2010:

"Sinking into the Self"

Guest: First, I like to thank you for giving us all this love.
Once you gave me this advice: I should inquire who I am.
And when I go into silence, I use this question all the time to stop my thoughts. And then sometimes, pictures are coming after a while from my mind. My question now: Is the mind creating such pictures, such illusions? Or where are these pictures coming from?

Madhukar: Certainly from the mind; certainly without mind there are no pictures, there is no manifestation, without mind there is no universe. Universe is mind.

G: One or two times as there was nothing, I became afraid. There was absolutely nothing, like black light.

M: Who gets afraid when there is nothing? You say there is nothing, who gets afraid then? If there is nothing nobody would be afraid. And, has the nothingness ever been afraid? No, the nothingness never. Who is afraid?

G: It is me.

M: It is the mind. If it is you, you have to find out who?
It is offered to you. Something is offered to you: manifestation. Something is offered to you: you call it black. Something is offered to you: fear. But who are you? Who are you ordering the plate, taking the plate, eating the plate, refusing the plate? Who are you?

G: This I do not know!

M: It is courageous to admit ‘I do not know’. Most man at your age, your position, your lifestyle, do not admit ‘I do not know, who I am’.

G: How can I find out, who I am?

M: By being here, at the source of everything. By sinking into the source, sinking with ‘s’, not with ‘th’. You pronounce it the same. Sinking, thinking. Everybody thinks. Nobody sinks, Sinking in the Self.

G: I will try this.

M: Do not even try, also at the source of trying there must be something.

G. So I will do it.

M: Like Socrates, you have arrived at this understanding ‘I do not know’, I do not know who I am’. And he did a lot of thinking before. Then he realised: I do not know who I am. But he was not afraid, not even afraid to die. He wanted to prove, his people, that he is not afraid. He knew: I am not the body. The body, which we all enjoy so much. And also the body which is suffering.

G: It is like we hold on to the small things we have.

M: What do you have? Nothing.
I hold this handkerchief; it is useful for the sweat, the tears and to fan away the flies. But actually, do I own it? No, it is cotton, some atoms, it is earth, and it will dissolve again to the very same, atoms. Even smaller parts, it is actually nothingness, useful nothingness.

G: But I am...

M: Before you said: ‘I do not know’ who I am. But now you say: ‘But I am’. You see? Immediately you cheat yourself, believing you know. The mind cheats yourself… mind always pretends to have knowledge. The moment, the instant you inquire, no knowledge is there, and even all the mindstuff is of no use, only illusion, enjoyable illusion. For some it is suffering, for some it is joy.

G. Yes, when I am here, in this moment now, I really do not know nothing. Ok, the mind sometimes makes me... I do not know...
I really have to be just here, then it is really easy.

M: What is this result of your practice?
That you are here! Why you use practice, if you are here anyway?

G: I am not always here.

M: Where do you go?

G: Sometimes I go into the past, sometimes in the future.

M: Great, others try to invent time machines, to go backwards in time and to travel into the future. You do not need a time machine. You are mastering that…
(silence)
Anyway, in your case, you have a double name, isn’t it? Two names, no? Hans-???

G: Jürgen.

M: Hans-Jürgen.

G: Yes.

M: Let Hans live in the past and Jürgen in the future. And that who you are, let it be here. Now.. That is happiness.

G: So I need a new name.

M: No, why a new name? Who is this: ‘Now I need’ ? Who is that, who says ‘I need’ ?
‘I’, you told me before, does not know anything. So what this ‘I’ says is nonsense. Now ‘I’ presumes again ‘I need’...
That was the first when you arrived in the now?

G: This was not I.

M: So now in this instant, before the ‘I’ arises, what is here?
(silence)

Good, good.

Reborn in Freedom

Madhukar: Welcome.

Visitor: How do I come out of captivity? (cries)

M: How is your name please?

V: Renate

M: And what does it mean: Renate?

V: The reborn.

M: Your ideas of captivity are memories of former captivities. Now your name says that you are reborn. Reborn in freedom. Now you fancy again that you are imprisoned. What is the result of that? Tears of happiness? No. Or do I give such a miserable impression that you are crying because of me? So, why are you crying?

V: When I am here with you, in front of you, then each time I feel fine the way I am. Totally accepted with all my positive and negative aspects. I never experienced this anywhere else, and that is why tears come up. I guess.

M: Fine, so you are touched, yes?

V: Yes.

M: And you are - as you say - accepted here. Why then are you leaving it again? You have been accepted already, you are accepted. Why are you leaving it again? What is more attractive than that? What is even better? What was even better?

V: Than being accepted?

M: Yes. What was even better than our last Oneness? You said that you are accepted when you are sitting in the front. What was even better? Tell me.

V: Nothing, nothing. Nothing at all. Noting at all.

M: So stay here. Just simply stay here. Being at home in Oneness. Now you have made the experience that all sorts of things suggest themselves to you, promising you experiences, often in form of mental ideas, emotions, promising you all kind of things, but cannot keep them. You have made these experiences before. Now you just simply stay here.

V: Thank you.

M: This being-here must be so strong, that all of this ideas, judgements, self-judgements, which have been put on you, burn up instantly. This incarnation is so short, only a moment, only a Now, did you not yet notice that? Only a Now. So why wasting this Now,this incarnation, with judgements about yourself? About others? About the world?

Real Joy

Visitor: I am happy to be here. And I want to thank you for everything from the bottom of my heart.

Madhukar: What happened that you want to say thank you for? What happened?

V: There is so much joy in me. I do not feel imprisoned anymore.

M: That is good. That is very good.

V: I have brought a present for you.

M: A present? It is not melting?

V: No.

M: It is big joy when you say: I am here. Most people are happy when something positive is happening in their life. Occurrences. There is nothing to say against this. But all occurrences do not grant real joy. Therefore the master indicates to you that which never happens, that which is behind everything that happens. When you realize this you can say: I am free, I am not imprisoned. I am the occurrence-less, and I am not frightened. Nothing must happen. Everything already is.

Surf riding in the ocean

Madhukar: How did I say today at the beach: if illusion then one that makes fun. But the people are so serious. Too limited. I see them looking at the ocean already in the morning at eight and again in the evening at sunset. I assumed that they gave all their illusions already to the horizon. But just like the ocean, again and again new waves are washed up. And on the waves a lot of garbage is floating. When you are a good surfer then you can enjoy the waves, furthermore it is better not to identify with it.

Does loneliness exist?

Visitor: Is loneliness not existing or only the loneliness of mind?

Madhukar: In reality there is no loneliness. It is only the loneliness of the ego.

V: That means: continue and switch off the ego?

M: Where did you learn that?

V: My mind tells me that.

M: I more likely say let be. Be here.

V: To be here means to be in meditation with myself.

M: No, I would not let any meditation come between me and me. For what? Meditation in its classical sense always means separation. Do not allow any separation, also no imagination of separation.

V: I do not understand that all the way. I thought I am in meditation when I am connected to myself. I did not know that I am in separation when I am in meditation.

M: Meditation is always concentrated on something, so it means separation. To be connected would then be religio, religion. That also means that there is differentness. You and something different with which you connect yourself. The imagination of a God who is separate from you. But I indicate to you that which is here, Self. Limitless Self. Formless love.

V: I am practicing.

M: As you wish. But each practicing will not bring you here, but only away from here.

V: OK. Thank you very much.

M: Welcome.

Desire for happiness

Madhukar: Loving silence is reality, is absolute reality. Once experienced, once realized, your troublesome life comes to an end. Since ten thousands of years the Sages indicate that reality is not as it seems and that your true Self is Peace.

But in some cases you do not trust this peace, you more trust the flickering of the two hundred million cells of your brain. Of course, that is really a lot! But it is not truth.

(Silence)

Now I know that in reality each of you simply wants to be happy, just simply being happy. One or the other has certain ideas how this happiness has to look like, what form it shall have. With some people who come to such an esoteric or spiritual congress it might even hide behind the idea of enlightenment.

But also then it still is the desire to be happy, to be contented. A very deep human desire. Because happiness is your true Self. You intuitively sense or you know that everything else like for example life’s circumstances, which mostly change, is not absolute truth. You are not absolutely satisfied with it. Because you sense intuitively. Deepest happiness, that is truth. Everything else: A compromise.

For this happiness you do not have to gain something and not to do anything, also when here and everywhere many want to talk you into that. This happiness is already here. You just had to do more important things until now. Something that was more important to you.

My Master Papaji indicated to me that this happiness is already here, this divineness, this Buddhaship. He did not ask me to do this or that or let be that. If at all he only asked me for clarity and he directly indicated to me Self that always is.

This Self we also can call heart, or God or Buddha, or whatever. Because it is not the name, the appellation, the definition. It’s you! What better do you have than that? Who else are you running after? What?

What is of a bigger importance to you than realizing in this life, at once, now, who is, who you are and be happy?
That is my question to you and you can answer it by yourself.

Let go resistance

Visitor: Dear Madhukar, I was nine years on the spiritual search and .....

Madhukar: …I destroyed it.

V: (laughs) Something like that, yes. It is good like this. Now, with searching for my Self in Advaita suddenly physical problems appeared. Am I full of resistances? How can I let them go and let everything happen?

M: It astonishes me that you ask me whether you are full of resistances because after the last Satsang in Cologne you came to me and you said: I am full of resistance. It surprises me that you now ask me whether you are full of resistance.

V: I am not really aware of what resistances there are.

M: At that time you were aware of it.

V: Yes, and what can I do now? One shall not do anything, but that is difficult for me now. How can I let go my resistances?

M: First you strive for getting the best medical advice and help for your physical complication of which you were telling about.

To the other issue I only can say that it does not make sense asking Advaita and also asking for the blessing of a Master of Advaita but still holding on to other old concepts. I never told you that you have to let go. You bring a whole bag full of spiritual concepts from your nine years spiritual search. This bag is heavy and stinks. You are dragging it around with you and you wonder why you are exhausted. I told you: you are welcome, put down the bag. Some rats or coyotes will be happy about it.

If you call an old garbage bag for letting go: I cannot remember ever standing in front of a garbage can carrying a garbage bag, which was already stinking and the juice running out of it, asking myself while bending over the trash dumpster: How shall I let it go? That always went very quick!

V: I want to let this happen. But as already said, it is very difficult if one has problems.

M: Well, that is because what you experienced on this nine years spiritual journey is for you not trash but something precious. I do respect that but you shall not complain then. You hold on to old experiences – they are over. You hold on to old concepts – they were not true even back then. They grew on the muck of mind. Good-natured mind, but they are not truth.

V: And how can I now recognize these resistances so I can let them go?

M: In our dialog it would be favorable when you would listen to me for three sentences as I listen to you.

Happiness, with or without Guru?

Visitor: What keeps me from being happy? For realizing it, do I need somebody transmitting the truth to me or does that takes place inside of me? Do I need such a Guru, yes?

Madhukar: Such a Guru surely is not useful. But a true Guru could be very, very good. But Guru is not something you need. There are two meanings of the word Guru. One is Guri, out of Sanskrit, meaning concentration. Through concentration on the clarity of the Master, his formless love that is beyond your imagination, dissolves what you so far believed you are. That means the person, which is attached to thoughts and body. Your body remains existing, at least for some decades, also your mental power, but this restricting identification vanishes.

The second meaning of the word: Banisher of the darkness. Guru: Banisher of ignorance.

So the Guru is not somebody who gives you something new because you are already That. If, then he banishes wrong imaginations, ignorance. This to the second part of your question. Regarding the first part you can judge yourself what keeps you from being happy. Just look at your thoughts from this morning when you woke up until now, that keeps you away.

Love

Visitor: A while ago you mentioned the term formless love. In my life I mostly feel a person-related love or just none at all. Sometimes it is a feeling of universal love, but this kind of love again is also looking for a person to unload itself. Therefore my question to you: Do you also feel person-bound love in your life sometimes or not at all anymore?

Madhukar: Yes, in my case the need for unloading is not existent. (Laughter) Us as person I see, if at all, the entire mankind, not one person. All beings.

V: Then it would not be perfect to love one person very much and others less?

M: No, no. I do not want to deny your perfectibility. Please, if it is like that with you so live it. It is wonderful.

V: I think that is the case with many people, that love is showing itself only with a few persons or very strongly only with one person, and for others less.

M: Well, at least that is the way it is written in the „Hörzu“, in „Brigitte“ and in the „Spiegel“!! (Laughter)

V: Can you again say something regarding this formless love?

(Silence, Madhukar is looking into the eyes of the visitor for a long time)

M: Do you understand now?

V: Yes, thank you.

M: Welcome.

Darshan of the Beloved

Visitor: Hallo Madhukar! I wanted to ask you what you are doing when you are looking at us the whole time. Somehow I can understand it but I would like to know what you are seeing when you are looking at us like this.

Madhukar: The approximately two hundred-fifty different colors we humans can differentiate are in reality not existent. There are no colors. There are just vibrations between four hundred and eight hundred nanometers. Certain wavelengths which are transmitted by the brain. Special neutrons get stirred and this then is translated into the colors blue, copper, blue, white. When a bee is flying it perceives a special vibration. The eye of the bee now perceives different colors than our eyes and it knows very well that at this vibration there is honey, or first nectar. That is why, when I look at you, I see the nectar.

V: Yes, and?

M: Well, what and? My interest is only the honey, the honey of life. You yourself do not believe that you are nectar, that you are free. That you are wonderful. And if you believe it then it is mostly an imagination of mind and will be smashed sometime in the course of life. I know you are nectar and I point it out to you. You are That. This limitless peace, this wonderful love that always is.

And what can the Beloved do than looking at the Beloved? He cannot hinder it. He sees the Beloved everywhere. Or as the artist says: Here I am, I cannot do any different.

Something Special

Madhukar: Yes please, here you are.

V: This thought arises in my mind that I want to be somebody special. In my understanding this is the central issue in my mind … or was.

Madhukar: Well, I know you very well. It is not that much the influence of the ego as you believe it is, but the knowledge of Self that you are in this life to recognize the Self. And this makes you different from the masses. Already since your childhood. That is why you never really were exactly like the others. You even tortured yourself with this. Now you use this impulse to be in a special way clear, in a special way authentic, in a special way compassionate. In a special way detached, in a special way uninterested. Whether you are loved or despised. In a special way devoted to the Self. Then you have used this impulse well.

V: Thank you very much.

Realization of Oneness

Madhukar: Nobody can capture love. But to be love is simple. Holding and wanting something is difficult, to be love not. There is nothing to it.

V: Madhukar, can you please show me how I can recognize that you and I are one and the same?

Madhukar: Well, I showed it to you every day, at least twice. Two times we were sitting vis-à-vis. Then you closed the eyes and I closed the eyes and we both vanished. Only presence is here. Did you not notice that?

V: In some moments yes. But it is hard for me to remain in this presence the whole time.

Madhukar: Yes, then you are sleeping. While I am moving like a tiger thru this world you are sleeping. Or dreaming. For a novice of Truth it is impossible to be thoughtless, therefore he is pointed out by the master onto That. Onto this presence that is underlying everything. Then it is not that decisively anymore that there is still mental activity, thought, dream. Because you are already informed: I am That in which everything comes and goes. Then mental activity is still influencing everyday life, dream content and manfestation of reality, but you already know: I am That. One. Now you are in the physical presence of the guru. You focus on this and you will use it for going inside after the retreat. In the beginning for me it also was somewhat confusing when my master said we are One. Because after Satsang he walked towards his house and I walked in mine. Sometime this idea of separation dissolved.

Being Here in Love

V: For me this all is totally new because I am not spiritual in my life. I have seen you one time in Cologne and just simply had to come here (retreat “Mystery of Oneness” in Goa). There was war between my mind and my heart. The heart won and now I get rewarded.

Madhukar: Now you get rewarded?

V: When I look into your eyes I only see pure love. I am totally speechless. I never before was that much in the Here and Now as I am when looking into your eyes. I would like to learn to integrate that into my everyday life. I often think about yesterday and tomorrow – but not about the Now.

Madhukar: The best is you totally merge into this love. Then also your everyday life becomes wonderful.

V: And how do I do that?

Madhukar: By not getting involved into old stories. This love of the master is hardly comparable with the emotional love, the love we know, the human nature in a relationship. It is so efficient that – if you do not turn away from it – it is outshining everything, when you fly back home. When you really authentically say: “It is the best that ever was!” Many have said that before and still they turned away from it – into their stories, their programs, past, the hope into future.

V: I am afraid of coming home...

Madhukar: Nonsense! For now you are here, then in Cologne, and there the cathedral of Cologne will watch over you. Don’t be afraid! The cathedral of Cologne is enlivened from within – I myself go there twice a year – it is watching over you then. But for now you are here and not in Cologne already again.

V: That is very beautiful!

With Logic into the Now

Visitor: I must admit that my mind is playing tricks with me the whole hour because of my logic. It goes along with me already fifty years. Twenty-five years I have been trying surpassing this logic. Even now I do not succeed.

A little example: Many traditions, many masters, teachers say with the pretty word: get something accomplished, do something, make an effort, do Vipassana, do this, do that. In Advaita I hear: there is nothing to do. Be still, be love, be here. To me both seem to be concepts. I tested both possibilities. And now? How does this contradiction get solved: do something and there is nothing to do?

Madhukar: Look at the result of your fifty years logics by yourself. Please tell me.

V: It helped me very well, I became clever, curious, seeking, earn my money, my life. But I am still here and ask: and now?

I do not imagine that I have found something thru this, except that I live my life.

M: Is this Now not the most wonderful there is? So full and yet so empty?

V: Yes, both.

M: Exactly. There is nothing else!

V: (laughs loudly) Thank you!

M: Welcome!

Lions & Sheep

V: Yesterday an insane anger came. It is simply there, very massive. I have the feeling it tears me up from inside. Anger about needing somebody external who brings me release.

But I do not need anybody. I am. I am wholesome myself. I am no sheep in a flock that needs a shepherd. That all is not correct. I fight with this in a certain way. I have asked myself whether it is resistance or defiance.

However, it feels like an inner knowledge that it is like this, that it is right.

Madhukar: Well, if it would be an inner knowledge, then there would be no necessity for this anger. It is theoretical knowledge. And if it would be knowledge, then you would be aware of the lion and you would see the other male and female lions. Between them there are sheep, and they are not hassled with.

Because in the Sangha it is like in paradise. Also goats and sheep can live there next to the lions. Therefore, if you externally get in touch with a master in a male or female form then there is no anger. Anger is the frustrated ego, which wants to be Self, but knows that in reality it is not. That is why this defiance, this anger comes up. Good so.

Much better than if it would dwell down there or in a mask taking any form of friendliness or falsehood. It may come outside. The master does not limit you and say your are sheep, you are stupid, you are unknowing.

The master is always in unison with this absolute truth of which you just were talking about, that needs nothing and nobody, that has no needs. But as long as there is the merest identification with the body, with the person, it is very favorable meeting also in the outside a manifestation, physical and personally, in form of the master.

Then among others these influences come up and this time they can vanish. Once and for all.

Decisions

V: I ask myself do I have a choice? Can I make a decision?
Madhukar: Regarding?

V: I left this open on purpose because mind is always again producing new decision-situations. But for example: “Can I make a decision regarding a profession which serves self-inquiry, which gives me the freedom to be with you more often?”. This is why I left it open, because there are different questions coming up again and again.

Madhukar: The best is when you are in peace. Peace. If you are in a working relationship where there is no peace, then this is not very favorable. Unfavorable.

But also here is valid: when your orientation is focused on peace, your life will be formed by itself accordingly, when this focus is clearly there, when this is the most important thing for you.
But if it is more important to you to satisfy other people’s conceptions they have of you, then your life will spin around this. Since a long time there is this discussion whether there is such a thing like a decision at all.

Why? Because everything within this universe is totally determined, predetermined. Yes, but within this of course you have skills, knowledge, and you can evaluate what you like and so on. Accordingly you can be oriented and also make a decision. Therefore, make the decision! Because one thing you did detect: remaining in doubt weakens you, and for a little while life becomes even more complicated. You feel trapped.

But when your orientation is focused on freedom, to be free, then you can do any activity, because you know “I am this wonderful power, that is behind everything, not the person with its hopes and desires, fears and misgivings”. The best is to be in peace and do nothing.
That does not mean, that you are not doing any activities, no work, that you do not nourish yourself. But the realization, that in truth you are not the doer. When we look at this with our mind it sounds a bit abstract and also contradictory.

But in realization all contradictions solve. In faith also all contradictions solve. My desire for freedom was so big that everything focused on this. And life was focused on what my master advised me, and that was self-inquiry. But it did not manifest in a dogmatic form but in a very vital one. It manifested in the mirror with “being in the world.” In activities, amusements and disappointments.

So now you do not have to decide your life until its end. It is very simple. Because when you turn towards Self then Self turns towards you. Well, sooner or later you will realize that you are blessed. Life and the world are not how they appear to us anyway if looking at it in a normal way, in a normal experience. In this respect do and let be what you like, and when your clock ticks you do what is necessary. It will reveal. It offers itself to you.

Your neighbours, your relations possibly are not interested in your freedom. They want to use your for their world, their recognition, for their concepts. All who want to be free have apostatized, broken away from these circumstances, at least for some period of time. Not in a bad intent, no.

In this authenticity the result becomes even bigger, more authentic, more truthful, to be true love, true relationship also with these people. Based on freedom, not on obligations, not on habitualness, not on limitation. It is good to be in harmony with the world, also with the material world, and clarity arises automaticly. So, I do not see any bigger difficulties for you.
